Created by The Cyclops Group, including Trevor Paglen, Crypt #36 unfolds through musical input, animated transitions and alternative views, making discovery part of the work.

Crypt #36 begins with rows of circles, triangles, squares and star-like glyphs crossed by sweeping arcs. The image resembles a score or a technical diagram, but its signs also function as clues. Entering the correct three-note sequence sets the field in motion: symbols separate and move toward the right edge, clearing space for the next layer. The transition settles into an eight-pointed network of fine curves and dots.

The work is credited to The Cyclops Group, comprising Scott K. Brewer, Trevor Paglen and James R. Roberge. It combines sound, code and image in a sequence of linked puzzles. Its metadata identifies nineteen glyphs, Puzzle Group 3 and a default composition called Puzzle 9.

After the first puzzle is unlocked, alternative views reveal dot-based writing, broken concentric arcs and an eight-spoked network of curves and points. The contrast between these forms makes the act of interpretation visible: the same work can be encountered as a drawing, a system of signs or a problem to be solved.

Our decoding of the terminal cipher HYXWMEAAVPNJJGBV yielded “AUGUST TWENTY FOUR.” That analysis traced the date sequence to 20 July 1969, the Apollo 11 Moon landing, advanced by the token number. For #36, adding 36 days gives 25 August; the decoded date falls one day earlier, a discrepancy consistent with UTC and local-time handling.

The unlocked curves and points can be read as orbital paths or a constellation of satellites, connecting the work visually with Paglen’s longstanding interest in hidden systems above the Earth. This is an interpretation of the image. No specific satellite, mission or event on 24–25 August 1969 has been established as the subject of this token.

Released on Art Blocks on 17 May 2023, Crypt leads into CYCLOPS, a collaborative alternate-reality project set against the histories of psychological operations and the emergence of networked culture. The work’s successive layers reward sustained attention and shared investigation rather than a single glance at its opening image.
