Fields Frigate 163/501 places a blue, capsule-like spacecraft in a field of exaggerated flowers. Smaller vessels hover around it, their metallic surfaces picking up the pink, turquoise and yellow of the surrounding vegetation. Uncertain scale makes the machines seem both monumental and toy-like, while the soft transitions between forms give the scene a painterly character.
The image belongs to AI Spaceships (2022), a collection of 501 works created using NightCafe. The series imagines humanity leaving an Earth made uninhabitable by climate change. Its ships encounter altered environments, hostile plants and possibilities of renewal. Here, the abundant flowers make technology’s encounter with nature appear fertile and inviting, even within that larger story of displacement.
The work reflects Spalter’s interest in the landscape as a meeting point of technological anxiety and imaginative possibility. Its visual appeal rests on the relationship between recognizable objects and the unfamiliar world that contains them.
