In Rabbit Takeover: Loki, a large white rabbit sits before an elaborate settlement of towers, decorated walls and densely grouped figures. More rabbits appear among the inhabitants. Green terrain, ochre paths and a brilliant blue sky organize the scene into shallow layers, while the crowded detail and ornamental surfaces recall manuscript painting.
Rabbit Takeover (2022) imagines a rabbit moving through a world after catastrophe and appearing within invented historical records. The series draws on the visual languages of block printing, Mughal painting and medieval manuscripts. Loki develops that historical fiction through the appearance of an old, richly populated scene in which rabbits have become part of the social order.
The collection comprises 557 works. In a 2023 interview, Spalter explained that she also used ChatGPT and Sudowrite to develop narratives for its images. AI therefore contributed to the project’s storytelling as well as its visual world. The result connects her interest in myth and transformation with the apparently familiar authority of historical imagery.
