Goodchild approaches the computer as a collaborator whose rules can produce results that exceed what the artist has explicitly designed. Trained in photography and in Design for Performance and Interaction, she works primarily in JavaScript. Audience participation and shared enjoyment are central to her practice.
Her projects connect natural systems with questions about how people find meaning. In Consequence Broadcast (2022), simulated chemical reactions generate patterns through local interactions; The Light Where We Meet (2025) draws on the synchronized flashing of fireflies. The long-form series Meaningless explores optimistic nihilism: the possibility of finding pleasure in a world without an intrinsic purpose.
Other projects move between language, software and the physical mark. For Meaningful Nonsense, Goodchild developed code to generate sentences and cursive handwriting, translating the results into pen-plotter drawings. Her technical essays make the methods behind generative art accessible, covering emergence, randomness and the history of early computer art.
Goodchild taught creative coding at The Bartlett, University College London, in 2020–21 and served on the Art Blocks Curation Board from July 2023 to summer 2024.
