The August 1965 issue of Computers and Automation awards its annual computer-art contest to A. Michael Noll’s Computer Composition with Lines. The account on page 10 describes a programmed arrangement of horizontal and vertical bars inspired by Piet Mondrian’s 1917 composition.

Page 11 adds Noll’s Vertical-Horizontal No. 3 and Gaussian Quadratic. Together with a CalComp testing pattern and D. J. DiLeonardo’s nuclear-reactor visualization, the selection records the overlapping artistic, mathematical, and technical uses of early computer plotting.

The gallery includes the front cover and the complete contest feature on pages 10–11.
