Four fields in deep blue, violet-blue and warm off-white transform the letter N through changes of scale, weight and alignment. Created with Martin Grasser, this 2023 work extends Molnár’s exploration of geometric order and deliberate disturbance into a series of 500 generative variations.

In Themes and Variations #260, the same letter moves between bold geometry and a delicate, almost handwritten line. At upper left, heavy dark Ns crowd together and turn at different angles; at upper right, a greatly enlarged form is cropped into sharp wedges against a pale ground. Below, a regular grid of dark Ns on violet-blue gives way to a diagonal band of thin, tilted blue forms on deep navy. The four fields set repetition against disruption, and legibility against abstraction.
The token’s recorded attributes identify a 2 × 2 grid, the letter N and the motif “N bold.” Its palette combines two near-black blues (#0E0E26 and #17173F), violet-blue (#2517A5) and warm off-white (#F2ECE7). Variations in scale and density give the composition its contrasts: the open upper-right field balances the crowded forms at upper left, while the orderly lower-left array meets a more restless diagonal rhythm at lower right.
For the series, Molnár began with drawn studies of the letters N, F and T arranged within squares. In collaboration with Martin Grasser, these studies became an algorithmic system that varies their position, size, weight, distribution and color. The letters refer to the medium in which the works circulate, yet their treatment also continues her earlier use of writing as a source of geometric form.
Released on 26 July 2023 through Sotheby’s and Art Blocks, Themes and Variations comprises 500 unique works. Molnár connected its title to musical variation, recalling Bach and Beethoven: a limited theme could sustain many different treatments. The series belongs to her late practice, more than half a century after she began using computers in 1968.
