In Self Portrait, the eye becomes both subject and point of encounter. At a distance, its anatomy is immediately recognizable; closer inspection breaks the image into fine marks whose directions and colors construct the iris, eyelids and surrounding skin. The contrast between bodily recognition and the image’s granular structure makes looking itself part of the subject.
