Edited by Alex Estorick, with a foreword by Jason Bailey, Right Click Save: The New Digital Art Community gathers published materials from the online magazine into a printed anthology. Published in February 2024, it records how artists and collectors understood the rapid expansion of digital art following the NFT boom, while placing that moment within a much longer history of artistic experimentation with computers.
The book’s value lies in this conversation across generations. In the introduction to her interview on page 23, Vera Molnár’s machine imaginaire is presented as a systematic method of making art that preceded her access to a mainframe in 1968. Her account connects chance, combinatorial thinking and the relationship between hand-drawn and machine-drawn lines to the later emergence of NFTs. A photograph of Herbert W. Franke working with electronic equipment provides another historical point of reference alongside recent work by Iskra Velitchkova, Tyler Hobbs and Helena Sarin.
In “When the Artists Met the Algorist,” Roman Verostko discusses software as the embodiment of an artist’s own ideas. On page 341, he recalls the development of his Hodos system, his discussions with Jean-Pierre Hébert and his friendship with Harold Cohen.
