Rows of colored rectangles travel across contrasting horizontal bands. Their changing spacing turns a simple arrangement of flat shapes into a rhythmic, continuously moving composition.

Passing #9 divides the screen into four horizontal tiers. Pale pink, blue, light blue and charcoal grounds carry upright rectangles in mint, cyan, yellow, gray, green and magenta. As the blocks move sideways, gaps open and close, and temporary alignments appear between the rows. The effect suggests both passing scenery and a graphic score.
The work belongs to Passing (2023), a series of 30 unique responsive software works. Rozendaal’s composition is implemented in code by Reinier Feijen and adjusts to the proportions of the browser. Its movement is generated live; a still image records only one arrangement within the work. The code is stored on Ethereum.
