Andreas Gysin (b. 1975) is a Swiss artist and designer who uses code, typography and display technologies to create moving images and physical installations. Characters, pixels and mechanical signs become materials for compositions that shift between legibility and abstraction.

Andreas Gysin works with the visual structures of devices designed to communicate information. Letters, numbers, grids and display segments become the components of moving compositions. By changing the rules that organize them, he loosens their connection to ordinary language and practical use, drawing attention to their shape, rhythm and behavior.

Born in Zürich in 1975 and based in Lugano, Gysin has collaborated with Sidi Vanetti since 2000. Their projects investigate industrial and urban signage, including split-flap displays and other electromechanical objects. A familiar sign can become unfamiliar when its components are rearranged or its expected message disappears.

His independent software practice applies a related approach to the browser and screen. ASCII characters can function as small drawing elements, creating texture, apparent depth and motion within a restricted vocabulary. His online playground shares experiments in this form, allowing code and its visual effects to be encountered together. Constraints such as a character set or a fixed display resolution become productive starting points.
