Rows of small discs form stepped, softly lit structures. The image gives a modular digital grid a tactile presence, with highlights and deep shadows suggesting rounded, metallic surfaces.

Smooth Steps is silent, real-time software made with HTML, JavaScript and WebGL. Its changing forms extend Gysin’s interest in modular displays into the behavior of light, surface and depth. The work can adapt to horizontal or vertical displays.

Output #164 specifies a reduced set, disc-shaped units, upward movement and one light. Display density and rendering quality can be adjusted in the live version, making it possible to balance the scale and detail of the image against the capabilities of the screen.
