A red horizontal bar cuts across a moving field of white square outlines. Made in tribute to Herbert W. Franke, the work uses geometric intersection to create gaps in the grid.

Released on 22 October 2022 for Tribute to Herbert W. Franke, organized by art meets science – Foundation Herbert W. Franke.

Intersections: Subtraction is one of two companion software works created for the 2022 tribute to Herbert W. Franke. Its published preview reduces the work to a red horizontal bar on black. The live work brings this emblem into a changing relationship with a white grid.
The program translates, rotates and scales a grid of square outlines using continuous oscillations. It tests the squares against the red shape and removes those that intersect its boundary. The missing squares open a shifting interruption in the grid around the bar.
The companion version, Intersections: Addition, reverses the selection rule. Together the works turn addition and subtraction into visible procedures. They were released on Tezos as separate editions of 32, with adjustable stroke widths, layout, motion and colors. The tribute connects Gysin’s software practice with Franke’s long investigation of mathematical structures as artistic material.
