Cybernetic Serendipity: The Computer and the Arts

1968

Cybernetic Serendipity documents the first international exhibition in 1968 devoted to the relationship between art and new technology. Curated by Jasia Reichardt, it brought more than 130 artists, composers, engineers, mathematicians and scientists together around computer graphics, algorithmic music, cybernetics, robotics and machine creativity. This is a foundational document of digital art history.

Historical Context & Conceptual Framework

Cybernetic Serendipity took place during a transformative era defined by postwar technological optimism coinciding with the British government's embrace of the "white heat of technology" and rapid advances in mainframe computing. Curated by Reichardt with layout and catalogue design by Franciszka Themerson, the exhibition avoided making heroic claims about machines replacing human artists. Instead, it investigated possibilities—exploring how cybernetic feedback loops, algorithmic logic, and computational chance (serendipity) could expand the frontiers of artistic expression.

The exhibition was structured across three main vectors:

  1. Computer-generated work: Plotter drawings, CRT graphics, algorithmic poems, choreography, and algorithmic music.
  2. Cybernetic devices & kinetic environments: Reactive sculptures, drawing automata, and interactive systems.
  3. Machines and educational machines: Demonstrations illustrating the history of computing and cybernetic theory.

1. Interactive & Reactive Cybernetic Installations

  • Gordon Pask (Colloquy of Mobiles, 1968): A multi-agent installation where suspended robotic forms communicated with one another using light beams, mirrors, and sound pulses. Gallery visitors could disrupt and participate in this behavioral discourse using flashlights.
  • Edward Ihnatowicz (SAM / Sound Activated Mobile, 1968): A biomorphic electro-hydraulic structure featuring an articulated spine and microphone array that dynamically rotated toward and tracked human speech and environmental sounds.
  • Wen-Ying Tsai: Interactive sculptures of vibrating stainless-steel harmonic rods illuminated by stroboscopic lights that shifted their visible oscillation in response to audience clapping and ambient noise.
  • Nam June Paik: Displayed his radio-controlled, ambulatory robot Robot K-456 alongside prepared television sets displaying electronically distorted raster patterns.

2. Plotter Art & Algorithmic Image Generation

  • Charles Csuri & James Shaffer: Pioneer vector transformations including Leonardo I (transforming Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man into algorithmic curves) and Random War (which algorithmically positioned soldiers across a simulated battlefield via an IBM 7094).
  • Computer Technique Group (CTG, Japan): Algorithmic transformation studies, notably Running Cola is Africa(gradually morphing the silhouette of a running human into a Coca-Cola bottle and finally into the outline of the African continent).
  • William Fetter & Boeing Computer Graphics: Early wireframe plots and 3D coordinate studies of the human body, initially developed for aircraft cockpit ergonomics.
  • Robert Mallary (Quad 1): Widely recognized as one of the world’s first CAD (Computer-Aided Design) sculptures, calculated on a mainframe and executed in physical materials.

3. Algorithmic Sound, Film & Text

  • Music: Highlights included the release of the companion 12-inch LP Cybernetic Serendipity Music, featuring compositions by Lejaren Hiller, John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, and Peter Zinovieff. In the gallery itself, Zinovieff demonstrated an interactive setup where attendees could whistle into a microphone and an 8K PDP-8/S computer would improvise counterpoint variations in real time.
  • Experimental Cinema: Early computer animation pioneers like John Whitney (Permutations) and Kenneth Knowlton (Bell Labs) screened geometric films composed directly on cathode-ray tube plotters.
  • Generative Literature: Included early permutations of computer-generated poetry such as Alison Knowles and James Tenney's A House of Dust and Edwin Morgan's The Computer's First Christmas Card.

Enduring Legacy

Attracting over 45,000 to 60,000 visitors in London before traveling across the United States (including stops at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the Exploratorium in San Francisco), Cybernetic Serendipity fundamentally shifted the public and academic perception of computers from bureaucratic calculating machines into fertile instruments of human imagination. It led directly to the founding of the Computer Arts Society (CAS) in London in 1968 and remains the historical benchmark for digital, interactive, and generative art history.
